Sean has starred on NCIS as Special Agent Tim McGee since Season 1 and he is one of only two original cast members left on the long-running CBS procedural. Off-screen, Sean has been with his wife, Carrie James Murray, nearly as long as he’s played McGee. The couple met in 2004 at a Halloween party, just one year after NCIS first debuted. After dating for a year, they got married on Nov. 26, 2005. The pair went on to welcome their daughter, Caitlyn, in 2007 and their son, River, in 2010.
Now, nearly two decades after tying the knot, Sean and Carrie are going their separate ways. Fans were shocked by the news, as their relationship seemed as ironclad as McGee and Delilah Fielding-McGee’s (Margo Harshman). Keep reading to learn more about the NCIS star’s marriage and why it’s ending.
Why are Sean and Carrie Murray divorcing?
Carrie James Murray filed for divorce from Sean Murray on March 29, 2024. According to court documents obtained by People, Carrie cited irreconcilable differences as the reason for their split and listed the official date of separation as March 18, 2024. She also requested spousal support and for her attorney fees to be covered by Sean. Additionally, she is seeking sole physical and joint legal custody of their minor children: Caitlyn, 16, and River, 13.
The filing did not indicate if there was a prenuptial agreement in place, but Carrie stated that the nature and extent of their respective properties have yet to be determined. The outletreached out to Carrie’s attorney and Sean’s reps for comment.
News of the couple’s split comes five months after they celebrated their 18th wedding anniversary. Carrie commemorated the milestone on Instagram, sharing a series of photos of themselves. “18 years of marriage and you still open the car door and pull out my chair. It’s true when they say, “It’s the little things that matter the most” I always get to pick what we watch. 😊 I always get to be first. 😙 After some consideration, I always get to be right, well in my mind anyway,😜” she captioned the post, which included a throwback photo from 2004 and a photo from their wedding. She added: “I love us @therealseanhmurray I’m so glad I went to that Halloween Party. 🧡 Photo 1: the earliest photo I can find of us, 2004 Grad School Graduation.” Sean commented on the post: “love you to pieces 😘.”
Just a month before their split, the pair celebrated Carrie’s birthday with a romantic date night. “Just when I thought there couldn’t possibly be another way to make pasta and pizza any better… Sean and I eat @motherwolfla 😱👵🏼🐺,” Carrie wrote alongside photos from their evening together. “Thanks for making my birthday dinner a success @therealseanhmurray❤️.”
Sean’s own social media is mainly dedicated to his work on NCIS, but he does share the occasional glimpse into his personal life. In April 2022, he shared a rare picture of his daughter as she prepared to make her NCIS debut. “I am pleased to introduce my daughter, Cay Ryan Murray, into the on-screen world of NCIS! Cay guest stars in our upcoming May 2 episode and I couldn’t be more proud =) #NCIS,” he captioned a behind-the-scenes photo. Cay starred in the Season 19 episode “The Brat Pack” as Teagan Fields, a teenager who was connected to a string of break-ins at Marine Base Quantico. While working the case, McGee formed a bond with Teagan, and the two even spent time together in the bullpen.
In May 2020, he dedicated a tribute to Carrie in honor of Mother’s Day. “Happy Mother’s Day to my incredible wife and all the moms out there!” he wrote alongside a selfie of themselves on a bridge.
