Functionality Of Each Component

The diagram may get you confused. Well, once you know what each component in the diagram does, it will clear up most of the things.

• Belt Tension Rod: The tension rod helps to maintain the proper tension of the belt. Otherwise, the belt will be loose or tight which will result in vibration and reduced cutting performance respectively.
• Spring Arm: The spring arm is essential for the belt to maintain tension and alignment as the belt wears out. Since wearing of belt cannot be avoided, the spring arm adjusts itself to maintain effectiveness. So as the belt wears out to a position such that belts remain tight and continue to drive the blades properly.
• RH Suspension Arm: The RH suspension arm connects the mower deck to the tractor chassis or frame. As a result, it provides a pivot point for the deck to move up and down reducing vibrations and forces.
• R.H Mandrel: The right side of the mower deck’s cutting blades are powered by the R.H Mandrel, which is a component of the belt drive system. As the mandrel rotates, it transfers this rotational motion to the cutting blades via a pulley system.
• R.H Mandrel Cover: As the name suggests, the only functionality of the R.H Mandrel cover is to protect the Rh Mandrel from debris and dirt.
• Primary Idler Arm: This component serves multiple purposes in the system. Firstly, it helps to maintain the smooth operation of the mower. Secondly, it helps to maintain proper belt alignment. Most importantly, the idler arm guides the belt around the system.
• Idler Pulley: This is different than the primary idler pulley. While the primary idler pulley guides the belt around the system, the idler pulley guides the belt through the mower’s cutting blades.
• Electric Clutch Pulley: The Electric Clutch Pulley is responsible for engaging and disengaging the deck of the mower. That means when you engage the mower PTO(Power Take Off), the electric clutch pulley engages and makes the blade rotate. When you disengage, it makes the blade stop.

How Is The Belt Routed?

The first component in the belt routing process is the engine crankshaft pulley. This pulley is connected to the engine’s crankshaft and is responsible for transferring power to the belt. From the engine’s crankshaft, the belt is connected to the belt tension rod first as you can see from the diagram.

The belt then passes over the spring arm, which is located on the side of the mower deck. Later on, it goes through the RH suspension arm, which is located on the right-hand side of the mower deck.

From the suspension arm, the belt goes straight through R.H. Mandrel and the primary idler pulley. It is to support the belt and maintain its tension as it moves over the pulleys.

Now, the only spaces left to cover are the idler pulley and the electric clutch pulley. Well, the first place the belt goes through is the idler pulley and then it goes to the electric clutch pulley only to create a loop around the system again.

How To Replace The Mower Deck Belt?

Here’s a guide on how you can replace the mower deck belt;

• Firstly, make sure your lawnmower is parked on a level surface.
• Engage the parking brake and ensure that the blades have completely stopped rotating.
• Disconnect the deck engagement cable from the deck engagement lever.
• Take off any holders or pins holding the mower deck to the frame.
• Simply take a wrench and take out the bolts that are holding the deck from the frame.
• Release the tension from the tension rod by using a wrench in the tension rod to loosen the bolt.
• Take out the worn-out belt.
• Take the new belt (dimensions: 1.5 x 5 x 14.25 inches) and route it in the way shown in the diagram.
