A strong team of four rid ers will leave for Toronto to morrow to defend the United States junior Nations Cup championship on Sept. 6.

The four members, selected by a committee appointed by the American Horse Shows Association are Wanda Bar field of San Antonio, Tex.; Fred Bauer of Horse South Norwalk, Conn.; Rick Day Show nor of Rochester, News Mich., and Ellen Raidt of Green wich, Conn. Last year, the United States quartet of Con rad Homfeld, Kip Rosenthal, Jean Metsker and Katie Mon ahan won the title with four faults. Homfeld and Miss Ros enthal are two of the leading jumper riders in the country this year.

“This team appears to be as strong as we've ever had for the event,” commented Albert E. Hart Jr., of Cedar hurst, L. I., the A.H.S.A. pres ident. “The competition, I un derstand, will be strong, too.”

Canada will be the host team, of course. In addition, squads from Germany, Ire land and Italy will take part in the competition. Coinci dentally, it is the five coun tries in the event that over the years have produced some of the strongest international jumping teams in the world.

On Sept. 5, the day before the Nations Cup, the riders will compete in an individual jumping event.

Matt Collins of Dalton, Pa., the Chef d'Equipe, and riders will arrive in Toronto early tomorrow afternoon. They will join with the Canadian team members in welcoming ceremonies at the Toronto Airport for the three Euro pean teams when they arrive later in the day.

After the formalities, the rest of the week will be used by the teams for conditioning and familiarizing themselves with the courses.

“This competition is be coming more important to the young riders of the country each year,” said Hart. “We have received many applica tions from juniors to join the team.”

Miss Barfield was the re serve equitation champion of Texas last year. She has rid den her horse, Normandy over jumps as high as 6 feet 8 inches. She is coached by Col. John Russell, a former United States international rider.

Bauer is the brother‐in‐law of his coach, Ronnie Mutch, master of Nimrod Farm in Weston, Conn., and also a former U.S.E.T. rider. Bauer has been riding UFO success fully all season and last year was champion at seven of the eight major shows in which he competed.

Daynor won 21 classes last year on Miracle Play while Miss Raidt has won four U.S.E.T. equitation classes this year on Russell's Mills in addition to performing in the junior jumper division. She is coached by Mrs. Judy Richter.

All three of last Sunday's horse show in the metropoli tan area had their problems because of the weather. It is a tribute to the managers and exhibitors that the shows fin ished.

At Sparta, N. J., where Homestead Stables was cele brating its 20th anniversary, the entry list was cut almost in half because of the weather.

“This was the first show I've ever run that started late,” said Vic Goines, Home stead owner. “The weather really was bad. In fact, I've been running into bad weath er at my shows a lot in the last year or so.”

The show ended under the lights.

At Hollandia Farm in St. James, L. I., Mills Pond ran its first show. The judges cards were supposed to be posted. But the judges could hardly read them let alone post them. And the loud speaker system conked out.

The Ridgfield Kiwanis show In Ridgefield, Conn., also struggled through.

“But it wasn't easy,” said Mrs. Carlton Estes, the man ager. “For a while, we didn't think anyone would show up.”
